The holidays are over, school has started again, and the weather is extra unpredictable in Louisiana. However, good times are still to be had as February ushers in the time for Mardi Gras! Coming a little earlier this year, floats will be parading the city of Shreveport ready to throw beads, toys, food, and many dablunes. If you wish to attend one of the large parades from local krewes of Centaur, Gemini, and Highland – or attend a new parade you haven’t attended before– it is good to know the routes, safety tips, and overall view of what to expect!

The parade schedules, times, and locations this year are as follows:

Crew of Centaur (Family Friendly): Saturday, February 7th @3pm

Location: Downtown Shreveport

Further information and route map: Parade Info | Krewe of Centaur | Shreveport & Bossier, LA

Krewe of Barkus & Meouxrewe (Pet Parade) (Family Friendly): Sunday, February 8th

Location: Louisiana Downs Casino and Racetrack

Crew of Gemini (Adult, but has a Family Friendly section): Saturday, February 14th @3:30pm

Location: Downtown Shreveport

Further information and route map: Krewe of Gemini Parade | Krewe of Gemini

Crew of Highland (Family Friendly): Sunday, February 15th @2pm

Location: Highland Historic District

Further information and route map: Route Info – Krewe of Highland

These parades will be coming fast (starting this Saturday) so make sure to plan accordingly! All parades are free to attend, and do not require any parking passes or paid standing spots unless you personally choose to rent a designated lot on the parade route. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothes, as not only will you be jumping up and down yelling “Throw me something mister!” you will most likely have to park several blocks (at least) from the route itself. Wear shoes you are okay with getting dirty, as it might be muddy!

Speaking of mud, make sure to bring a rain covering with you, and even a jacket! The weather during Mardi Gras is infamous for rain, shine, and cold, so it’s best for you to be as comfortable as possible as you catch your goodies! Along with these tips, make sure you carry only essentials close to you, and not have your entire wallet on you. Unfortunately, Mardi Gras is a distracting event that other people might try to take advantage of. Along with your essentials, have water and a bag with you so you can stay hydrated and have a way to carry all your parade catches home! If you plan to hang out on the parade route before the floats come to that location, you might want to bring a blanket or chairs to sit on and enjoy the festivities. If you drive to a parade and park, also make sure valuables are hidden away and you are parked in an area you will not receive a ticket for!

Mardi Gras is the perfect time to enjoy community, dress up silly, and enjoy time outdoors. While having fun this season, make sure to stay safe, comfortable, and – most importantly – let the good times roll!
