Caddo Parish Sheriff Impersonated in Ongoing Scam

"Scam Alert" by Kendall Mears/Almagest LSUS

Louisiana ranks third highest in receiving scam calls and texts across the United States, according to KLFY as of 2026. However, this epidemic of scams has hit closer to home than ever before. The Caddo Sheriff's Office released an official statement on May 18, 2026, warning residents about an ongoing email scam where Henry Whitehorn, the Sheriff of Caddo Parish, is being impersonated to swindle the public.

The number of victims has not been disclosed, nor have the monetary damages, as the investigation is still ongoing. However, several residents have received emails asking if their "schedule is open this morning." Upon responding or clicking the embedded link, they are directed to purchase gift cards. The Sheriff's office emphasized that Sheriff Whitehorn or any employees of the Caddo Parish Sheriffs' office will not request gift cards, money transfers, or financial information through email, text messages, or social media. The public is urged to use caution when receiving any unexpected electronic communication, as the ability to spoof an email address to appear to be from a trusted source has become more frequent.

The authorities suggest the following safety guidelines to protect oneself:

  • Do not click on suspicious links or attachments.
  • Do not buy gift cards for anyone claiming to represent law enforcement.
  • Verify messages by calling the agency/department directly at an official phone number.
  • Report any scam attempts to local law enforcement.

The digital age has made scams far more complex and harder to detect, and shows no indications of slowing down. Therefore, take precautions to protect yourself and your income by verifying any payment through official sources. Anyone who has been targeted by this scam or one of a similar nature is encouraged to contact the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office at (318) 675-2170.
