The Mandalorian and Grogu – 2026 – 132 Minutes – Rated PG-13

3/5 ★

Filled with action and the kind of silly charm its television counterpart has become known for, The Mandalorian and Grogu is not a movie interested doing anything fresh that might appeal to a new audience. It knows who it’s after. That may not make it the best film of the year, but it should be a fun watch for fans.

Disney’s time with the Star Wars franchise has been contentious, to put it mildly. Despite popular shows like Andor and Star Wars Rebels, fans have not flocked to every offering the studio has put out. So, it isn’t surprising to see one of its most successful properties, The Mandalorian, getting a new entry in the form of The Mandalorian and Grogu. It also isn’t surprising that the film chooses to stick pretty closely to what has made the show such a hit. I admit it’s disappointing that it takes so few risks, but I understand.

In their first major motion picture, the titular Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) and his young ward, Grogu, are tasked with finding the nephew of two Hutt crime bosses. Along the way, they have to contend with other bounty hunters, monsters, and Imperial soldiers all trying to kill or capture the pair.

There’s far more to each story beat than I can describe without spoiling the overall plot of the film, but the way the script is structured makes it difficult to talk about. This feels less like a movie and more like three or four episodes of The Mandalorian stacked on top of one another. Mando and Grogu go to a location to do something, accomplish their goal, then leave and find a brand-new mission to pursue. Rinse and repeat the process a few times, and that’s the entire movie. It’s not a bad structure, really, and it’ll be comfortable and familiar for fans of the show. However, it doesn’t really feel like watching a single, cohesive narrative.

The cast and crew do their best to make the whole affair work. Everyone is fairly used to their roles at this point, though I’d argue nobody really stands out. The physicality of Mando, who has to communicate with gestures since we rarely see his face, is as impressive as ever. Brenden Wayne provides most of the work in the suit itself, and he does a wonderful job. It’s the only performance that rises above “good enough” in my opinion.

Sadly, the film’s CGI and puppet work wind up also being basically just acceptable. I wouldn’t say that anything looks terrible, but none of the effects blew me away either. In a film that goes to as many diverse planets and shows as many different creatures as this, I’d really have liked for a few of them to be exceptional.

By far, the highlights of the movie are the action sequences. It is, admittedly, very fun to watch Mando fight. He has an arsenal of weapons at his disposal and the film does a good job giving him a chance to utilize them in creative and interesting ways. Due to the episodic structure, there’s also plenty of varied environments and enemies that have to be dispatched differently, so the violence never gets stale. Clearly, a lot of thought and care went into crafting the action, and it works to the film’s benefit.

Honestly, this may be a hard movie to judge, but it is an easy one to recommend. If you like The Mandalorian, I can’t imagine you won’t enjoy The Mandalorian and Grogu. It is entirely just that show in film form. If you don’t like the series already, you probably don’t have a compelling reason to even give the movie a shot. There’s nothing for you here. This is a film made for established fans, and there’s nothing wrong with that, even if it is a bit overly safe. Star Wars used to be known for big risks and bold ideas, but it seems that was a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.
