LSUS Baseball Finally Crosses the Finish Line and Brings Home a National Championship

[2]

The 2025 Louisiana State University – Shreveport Pilots baseball team will go down in history as the greatest team in NAIA baseball history. This team did something that never happened before in any level of baseball, going undefeated. While the Pilots had plenty of run-rule blowouts, there were some close games they had. A few games where if one thing went wrong, the Pilots would lose. Just one passed ball or wild pitch. One missed grounder or pop-up. One mistake pitch that gets hammered. One swing and a miss.

That did not happen, though. Every game they found a way to win. LSUS alumni Courtney Avant, who was at the history-making game, said it best when talking to Red River Radio, “This is like, really crazy. Like, unheard of, basically.” Head coach Brad Neffendorf achieved perfection, something unheard of in this game of failure we call baseball.

Many great teams have come and gone through the LSUS baseball program. Rocke Musgraves dominated the NAIA scene for 13 seasons, winning conference championships almost every year and making the trip to Lewiston, Idaho, the site of the NAIA World Series, three times as the Pilots head coach. However, he could never finish the job. Neffendorf, who just finished his sixth season as head coach of the Pilots, just now got to his third world series and did what no other LSUS squad had done before.

Neffendorf was quick to remind us of all the great teams that came through and could not get it done despite giving everything they got. Reporters in Lewiston asked for his immediate thoughts following the championship game. Neffendorf called it “Thirty-five years in the making” and a “Program national title”. He told reporters in Lewiston, “There’s a lot of really good teams, a lot of really good players, a lot of really good coaching staffs that have been here. They helped pave the way for us to be in this position, for our guys to do something unbelievably incredible this year.”

Neffendorf gave props to Southeastern, the team LSUS defeated to win the championship, on a hard-fought game and says he “could not be any more proud of these guys than I am right now,” referring to the LSUS players. This is the first ever national championship for not only LSUS baseball, but LSUS as a whole.

With this success lots of attention came from big media outlets. There have been a handful of YouTube, TikTok, X, and Instagram posts from all the big sports outlets. LSUS was shouted out on SEC Network during a matchup between LSU and Arkansas. They were talked about multiple times on Good Morning America and even got featured on ABC News. They also got an invitation to the White House, granted with the help of Mike Johnson, Bossier City native, Speaker of the House, and right-hand man of President Trump. No other NAIA team has or will ever get this kind of recognition ever again, nor will any team, especially in baseball, have this success ever again. As the announcer said at the end of the championship win, “Perfection wears purple.”
